The word “check” is another word that is common in phrasal verbs.
There are three main phrasal verbs that use the word “check” (check into, check out, check off) and they all have very different meanings.
This post will explain what each of these phrases means and how each is used.
Check in (to): This phrase has two common meanings. The first means to “officially let someone know that you have arrived.” This especially pertains to hotels or airports. Here are a couple of examples:
You must check into the hotel by noon.
I need to go check in and then we can get some lunch.
This phrase can also mean “to investigate.” Here is an example:
He says that things have been disappearing from the store, so I asked the police to check in to it.
Check out: This phrase is often used as an opposite of “check in” and means “to officially let someone know that you are leaving.” Here is an example:
If you are not checked out by 5:00, you will have to pay extra.

This phrase can also mean “to follow procedures for borrowing something” and usually refers to a library. Here is an example:
You are only allowed to check out 5 books at once.
Finally, “check out” can mean “conferir.” Here is an example:
Check out the latest news on our website.
Check off: This phrase means “to make a mark to indicate that something on a list has been completed.” Here is an example:
I took out the trash, so that’s one more thing I can check off my list of things to do before Mom gets home.
