The expression Pull Out All the Stops comes from the way that pipe organs were constructed.
These organs were made with stops that were used to control the air flow through the pipes.
Pulling out the stops would increase the volume and putting them back in would decrease it.
Eventually, the phrase “pulling out all the stops” became popular in contexts other than pipe organs. It now means “to make every possible effort to achieve something.” Here are some examples:
