Another word that has multiple meanings and can be used as a noun or a verb in English is tip.

This word in particular has several different meanings, so trying to keep them all straight can be rather difficult. The following will attempt to facilitate that endeavor for the student of English.

Ponta, gorjeta ou dica?

As a verb, it has primarily two meanings: “derrubar” and “dar gorjeta.” Here is how they are used in a sentence:

Did you tip over the vase?

When they do something for you, they expect you to tip them.

As a noun, the meanings of  this word are slightly more numerous. First of all, the most common meaning is “ponta.” For example:

He accidentally cut the tip of his finger with a knife.

This word can also mean “dica.”

Can you give me a tip about how to pass the test?

Finally, it can mean “gorjeta.” Here is an example:

To show that you are pleased with their service, always leave a tip.
