The expression “caught red-handed” which means “caught in the act of a crime” has a couple theories as to its origin. However, only one of them is verifiable; the other is somewhat mythical. Experts still agree, though, that the expression originated in Scotland.
The first and mostfar-fetched theory about the origin of this expression is that it came from boat races in Scotland where the first to touch the shore with his hand would be the winner.

As the story goes, some contestants would actually cut off their hand and throw it toward the shore in an attempt to win unfairly. Of course, they were usually caught with blood on their hand (red-handed) and exposed for their cheating.
The more verifiable origin of the phrase is also more logical. The theory is that the expression simply refers to catching someone with blood on their hands after they have committed a murder. Nowadays, the expression refers to catching anyone doing anything they are not supposed to be doing. It no longer exclusively refers to catching murderers although it can.
