?? Hey guys, this is Sara Scarcelli! ? This post is going to be a little bit different because I’m going to write in English to help you practice your skills! Do you accept my challenge? Alright! Let’s talk about Valentine’s Day! Ownnnnn!
Is Valentine’s Day a big deal? ? Valentine’s Day in Portuguese translates to “Dia dos Namorados“. Here in Brazil, we celebrate our Dia dos Namorados on June 12th. Whereas in the United States, Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14th!
In addition to the United States, Valentine’s Day is also celebrated in Canada, Mexico, France, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
Did you know that approximately 150 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine’s Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas.
So what’s the story behind Valentine’s Day?
Some believe that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than men that had wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. But when Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death on February 14th. That’s why this day was known as Valentine’s Day!
According to another legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent his first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl–possibly the jailer’s daughter. And before his death, it is alleged that in a letter he signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still used today. Very interesting, huh?
